Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ice Girl’ forms a compact rounded deciduous shrub with dense mophead flower clusters in clean white to creamy-white shades. The blooms may open with pale green tones and often develop subtle green or pink colouring as they age. Mature plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. White flower colour is largely unaffected by soil acidity. It performs well in sheltered Irish gardens, although late frost can damage developing buds. Protect the flower heads from harsh afternoon sun and drying wind. Prune lightly in spring, removing dead stems and old flowers while retaining healthy previous-season growth.
