Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blue Wave’, also known as ‘Mariesii Perfecta’, forms a broad deciduous shrub with glossy green leaves and large flattened flower heads. Violet-blue fertile flowers occupy the centre, surrounded by a ring of showy blue sterile florets. In alkaline soil, the display may become mauve or pink. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich acidic soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is hardy and dependable in sheltered Irish gardens, although flower buds can be damaged by late frost. Prune lightly in spring, removing dead wood and faded heads to the first strong pair of buds without cutting back the healthy framework.
