Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ayesha’ is a distinctive mophead hydrangea with fleshy, cup-shaped sterile florets that resemble small lilac petals. The rounded flower heads are usually lilac-blue in acidic soil and pink to mauve in more alkaline conditions. A light fragrance, unusual among hydrangeas, may be noticeable in warm weather. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It performs well in sheltered Irish gardens but should be protected from cold drying winds and late frost. Prune lightly in spring, removing old flower heads and dead wood while preserving healthy older stems carrying the season’s flower buds.
