Hydrangea aspera ‘Velvet and Lace’ Description

Hydrangea aspera ‘Velvet and Lace’ is a deciduous shrub combining large softly textured leaves with broad lacecap flower heads from midsummer into autumn. The fertile central flowers develop rich mauve to purple colouring, surrounded by contrasting larger sterile florets in pale lilac or pink shades. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2.5 metres high and wide, forming an impressive leafy specimen. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Shelter from strong winds is important because the large velvety leaves can tear or scorch. It is hardy in many Irish gardens. Pruning should be limited to removing dead, weak or overcrowded stems, as unnecessary cutting can reduce the following season’s flower display.
