Hydrangea arborescens ‘Pink Annabelle’ is a pink-flowered smooth hydrangea producing large rounded flower heads on upright deciduous stems. The blooms open in rich rosy pink and gradually soften as they age, providing colour from midsummer into early autumn. Mature plants generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is fully hardy and performs reliably in Ireland, although watering during dry periods helps prevent the broad leaves from wilting. Flowers form on new season’s growth, so prune in late winter or early spring by shortening stems to a strong framework. Mulch annually and remove weak or congested shoots at the same time.
