Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ Description

Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ forms a broad deciduous shrub with large soft green leaves and exceptionally large rounded flower heads. The blooms emerge pale green, mature to creamy white in midsummer and gradually return to green as they age. Mature plants generally reach around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and can spread equally wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It performs exceptionally well in Ireland, although the large flower heads can bend after heavy rain, particularly on soft young stems. Flowers are produced on new growth, so prune in late winter or early spring, cutting stems back to a strong framework. Less severe pruning generally produces slightly smaller flowers on sturdier stems.
