Hosta ‘Empress Wu’ Description

Hosta ‘Empress Wu’ is an exceptionally large herbaceous perennial producing huge, heavily veined blue-green leaves on substantial upright stems. Mature clumps can reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and spread 1.5 to 2 metres when established, so it needs considerably more space than an ordinary hosta. Tall flower stalks carrying pale lavender blooms appear in summer. Grow in partial shade or dappled light in deep, fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Regular moisture and generous organic matter are essential for developing the largest foliage. It is fully hardy and particularly suited to Ireland’s cool, damp climate. Protect the emerging shoots from slugs and snails and allow several years for young plants to develop their full monumental size.
