Hosta ‘El Niño’ forms an elegant mound of pointed, blue-grey leaves edged by a clean creamy-white margin. The cool-toned foliage provides excellent contrast with ferns, dark-leaved heucheras and woodland planting. Pale lavender flowers rise above the leaves on slender stems during midsummer. Mature clumps generally reach around 40 to 50cm high and 70 to 90cm wide. Grow in partial shade or dappled light in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Too much direct sun can reduce the blue leaf coating and scorch the pale margins. It is fully hardy and performs particularly well in Ireland’s cool conditions. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails and water container plants regularly during dry weather.
