Holboellia coriacea Description

Holboellia coriacea is a vigorous evergreen climber with handsome, leathery leaves divided into glossy green leaflets. Small male and female flowers appear in spring, typically combining creamy white and purple colouring and releasing a sweet fragrance. Where pollination and warmth are sufficient, elongated purple edible fruits may develop later in the season. Mature plants can climb 5 to 8 metres or more, so provide a sturdy wall, pergola or mature framework for the twining stems. Grow in partial shade or sheltered sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. In Ireland, choose a warm site protected from severe frost and cold winds. Prune after flowering where necessary to restrict vigorous growth or remove tangled stems.
