Hakonechloa macra Description

Hakonechloa macra is a deciduous ornamental grass forming elegant mounds of narrow, arching green leaves. The stems lean in one direction, producing a flowing, waterfall-like habit that is especially effective on banks, beside steps and beneath open-canopied shrubs. Fine flower panicles appear among the foliage in late summer, while the leaves develop warm yellow, orange and bronze shades in autumn. Mature clumps generally reach around 40 to 50cm high and spread slowly through short rhizomes. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is fully hardy and well suited to Ireland’s cool climate. Avoid very dry ground and exposed wind. Cut the dead foliage to the base in late winter before new shoots emerge.
