Gordlinia grandiflora Description

× Gordlinia grandiflora is an unusual hybrid between Franklinia alatamaha and Gordonia lasianthus. It develops into a large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with glossy, leathery dark green leaves that may develop red autumn colouring before partially falling in colder weather. Fragrant white flowers with prominent yellow stamens can measure around 10cm across and open from midsummer into autumn. Mature plants may reach 4 to 6 metres in a favourable position. Grow in full sun or light partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, acidic soil that remains moist but drains freely. In Ireland, choose a warm sheltered garden and protect young plants from hard frost. Avoid lime, cold waterlogged ground and exposed easterly winds. Pruning is rarely required.
