Geranium wallichianum ‘Sylvia’s Surprise’ is a low, spreading perennial with branching trailing stems and deeply divided green leaves. Saucer-shaped pink flowers, delicately patterned with darker veins and paler centres, appear from midsummer into autumn. Mature plants reach around 30 to 40cm high and can spread considerably wider, making them useful for filling spaces between shrubs, softening border edges and covering sloping ground. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moderately moist but drains freely. It is fully hardy and suited to Irish gardens, although watering during dry weather maintains the longest flowering display. Trim back stems that spread beyond their allotted space and clear away old foliage in late winter or early spring.
