Geranium macrorrhizum Description

Geranium macrorrhizum is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial with rounded, deeply lobed leaves that release a strong aromatic scent when touched. Clusters of pink, purple-pink or occasionally white flowers appear above the foliage in late spring and early summer. The leaves often develop red and bronze tones during autumn and remain present through mild winters. Growing around 30 to 40cm high, it spreads steadily through thick rhizomes and forms excellent weed-suppressing ground cover beneath trees, shrubs and hedges. Grow in sun or shade in almost any reasonably drained soil. It tolerates dry ground and root competition once established, making it especially useful in difficult positions. Trim untidy foliage after flowering or in spring, and divide unwanted sections easily with a spade.
