Geranium cantabrigiense ‘Intense’ is a low, spreading hardy geranium forming a dense mat of rounded, aromatic green leaves. Bright magenta-pink flowers are held above the foliage from late spring into summer and attract visiting pollinators. The leaves often develop red and bronze colouring during autumn and may remain partly evergreen through mild winters. Plants generally reach around 20 to 30cm high and spread gradually through short rhizomes, making them useful for ground cover, border edging and planting beneath open shrubs. Grow in full sun or partial shade in almost any moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry shade once established and performs reliably in Irish gardens. Trim after flowering if a neater carpet is required and divide congested patches in spring.
