Fargesia scabrida ‘Asian Wonder’ Description

Fargesia scabrida ‘Asian Wonder’ is a colourful clump-forming bamboo with upright blue-green canes wrapped in vivid orange, rust-red or purple culm sheaths. Narrow green leaves create a dense evergreen screen, while the contrasting stems add interest when some lower foliage is removed. Mature plants generally reach 3 to 4 metres high and spread gradually from a compact base rather than producing invasive runners. Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is hardy in Ireland and tolerates more sun than many Fargesia cultivars, provided the roots never dry out. Shelter from severe wind prevents leaf damage. Water generously during establishment, mulch annually and remove occasional old canes at ground level to encourage fresh growth.
