For tropical style, Ensete ventricosum ‘Maurelii’, the Ethiopian Black Banana, is a dramatic evergreen with huge paddle-shaped leaves flushed red. Though rarely flowering in cultivation, its foliage makes a bold summer statement. Large and tufted in habit, and holding RHS Award of Garden Merit, it thrives in sheltered Irish gardens or containers in mild areas.
