Alpine Wood Fern
I hold the RHS | Award of Garden Merit
Dryopteris wallichiana, the alpine wood fern, forms an upright shuttlecock of broad divided fronds, bright yellow-green when young and carried on dark, almost black-scaled stems and midribs. The contrast between fresh foliage and dark scaling gives it a particularly handsome spring appearance. It prefers cool, sheltered shade and moist but well-drained soil.
✅ Dark-scaled stems contrast strongly with fresh green fronds
✅ Upright shuttlecock habit gives excellent woodland structure
✅ Hardy and generally low maintenance in cool shade
(−15 to −10 °C) Cold-hardy
