Soft Tree Fern
I hold the RHS | Award of Garden Merit
Dicksonia antarctica, the soft tree fern, develops a thick fibrous trunk crowned by a broad shuttlecock of long arching green fronds, creating a distinctly prehistoric architectural effect. It can eventually reach several metres but grows slowly. In Ireland it is best in sheltered shade with moisture-retentive soil and dependable winter protection around the crown and trunk.
✅ Dramatic tree-fern form gives exceptional architectural impact
✅ Broad green fronds suit sheltered woodland-style planting
⚠️ Half-hardy and needs winter protection from frost
