Dianthus ‘Whatfield Can Can’ Description

Dianthus ‘Whatfield Can Can’ forms a low evergreen cushion of narrow silver-green leaves, topped by abundant bright pink double flowers during summer. The softly fringed blooms have a strong traditional clove fragrance and are best positioned near paths, seating areas or entrances where their scent can be appreciated. Growing to around 15 to 20cm high with a slightly wider spread, it also suits alpine beds, gravel gardens and containers. Plant in full sun in neutral to alkaline soil with excellent drainage. It is hardy in Ireland but dislikes heavy winter-wet ground. Deadhead regularly to encourage further flowers and lightly trim the plant after its main display to retain a dense, tidy shape.
