Dianthus ‘Sugar Plum’ Description

Dianthus ‘Sugar Plum’ forms a neat evergreen mound approximately 24cm high, with narrow grey-green leaves providing a cool-toned background for its highly patterned blooms. Dark chocolate buds open during summer into scented double flowers with wavy-edged petals combining maroon, rich pink and white. The detailed colouring is most easily appreciated near paths, seating areas or in a raised container. Grow in full sun in neutral to alkaline soil that drains sharply, adding grit where the ground is heavy. It is hardy in Irish gardens but may suffer if the crown remains wet during winter. Remove fading flowers to encourage replacements and lightly trim spent stems after the main flowering period while retaining the evergreen foliage.
