Dianthus ‘Oscar’ Description

Dianthus ‘Oscar’ refers to a compact series of early-flowering pot carnations rather than one consistently defined flower colour. Plants form neat, well-branched mounds of narrow grey-green foliage and produce numerous fringed blooms through spring and summer. Depending on the selection supplied, flowers may be pink, red, purple, white, salmon or bicoloured, so some variation should be expected. Growing to around 20 to 30cm, the plants suit patio pots, window boxes, rockeries and sunny border fronts. Grow in full sun in fertile, freely draining neutral to alkaline soil or compost. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and avoid saturated winter ground. In exposed Irish gardens, container plants benefit from shelter during prolonged severe frost.
