Deschampsia cespitosa Description

Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly known as tufted hair grass, forms a dense evergreen tussock of narrow, leathery dark green leaves. Fine arching stems carry open clouds of silvery-purple flowers during summer, gradually fading to warm straw shades and remaining attractive into autumn. Flowering plants can reach around 1 to 1.5 metres, while the foliage mound remains considerably lower. This Irish native suits prairie-style planting, damp meadows, cottage borders and partially shaded woodland edges. Grow in sun or partial shade in humus-rich, acidic or neutral soil that is moist but well drained. It tolerates exposed and coastal conditions. Cut old flower stems and tired foliage back in early spring before the fresh green growth resumes.
