Cyrtomium devexiscapulae Description

Cyrtomium devexiscapulae is an unusual evergreen holly fern with broad arching fronds divided into irregular, twisted or sickle-shaped green leaflets. Mature plants can spread 80cm or more, making them useful for filling substantial shaded spaces beneath shrubs or through woodland-style borders. Grow in partial or full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is hardy enough for many Irish gardens, although a sheltered position protects the fronds from cold drying winds and heavy weather. Allow adequate room when planting, as crowding can spoil its naturally spreading outline. Remove old or damaged fronds at the base in spring and mulch with leaf mould to maintain cool, moisture-retentive conditions.
