Cotoneaster floccosus Description

Cotoneaster floccosus forms a narrow evergreen shrub or multi-stemmed small tree with graceful, hanging branches. Its deeply veined, leathery leaves are polished dark green above and densely white beneath, creating attractive movement in the wind. Small white flowers appear in summer and attract pollinating insects, followed by clusters of tiny reddish-crimson berries that provide autumn and winter colour for birds. Mature plants can reach 4 to 8 metres high while remaining relatively narrow. Grow in sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil and choose a sheltered position. It is hardy in Ireland, although the ornamental berries should not be eaten. Prune only where necessary to remove damaged or badly placed growth.
