Clematis alpina ‘Willy’ Description

Clematis alpina ‘Willy’ is a hardy deciduous climber producing graceful, nodding pale pink flowers during spring. The outer petals are flushed more deeply near their base, while creamy staminodes form a contrasting centre. Attractive silky seed heads follow the flowers and provide additional interest into summer. Growing approximately 1.5 to 2.5 metres, it suits smaller arches, fences, trellises and growing through open shrubs or small trees. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is particularly useful in cool Irish gardens and tolerates more shade than many large-flowered clematis. Routine pruning is unnecessary. Remove damaged growth and shorten oversized stems immediately after flowering, preserving the older wood that carries the following spring’s blooms.
