Cerastium tomentosum Description

Cerastium tomentosum, commonly known as snow-in-summer, forms a dense mat of narrow silver-grey leaves on trailing stems. Masses of small white, five-petalled flowers appear in late spring and early summer, sometimes almost concealing the foliage. It spreads quickly across sunny banks, walls, gravel beds and dry border edges and can soften paving or stonework effectively. Grow in full sun in poor to moderately fertile soil with excellent drainage. It tolerates drought, coastal exposure and lean ground once established, making it useful in challenging sites. However, its growth can become invasive in smaller borders. Trim hard after flowering and remove unwanted rooted stems to keep it controlled. Avoid heavy winter-wet soil in Irish gardens.
