Hornbeam 'Frans Fontaine'
Carpinus betulus ‘Frans Fontaine’ is a notably narrow, columnar hornbeam, reaching around 10m while staying much slimmer than most forms of the species. Fresh green leaves turn a rich golden yellow in autumn, and the brown foliage is often retained into winter. Its upright outline makes it particularly useful where height is wanted without an excessively broad crown.
✅ Narrow columnar crown suits tighter planting spaces
✅ Golden-yellow autumn colour with some winter leaf retention
⚠️ Still develops into a tall tree of around 8–12m
(< −20 °C) Extremely hardy
