Berberis thunbergii ‘Bagatelle’ Description

Berberis thunbergii ‘Bagatelle’ is a very compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub with a naturally rounded habit. Small deep red-purple leaves cover the thorny stems through summer and develop brighter red colouring in autumn. Pale yellow spring flowers may be followed by small red berries later in the year. Growing to around 30cm high and wide, it is well suited to edging, rock gardens, gravel planting and containers. Plant in full sun for the strongest foliage colour, although partial shade is tolerated, in any moist but well-drained soil. It is fully hardy and dependable in Irish gardens, including exposed and coastal positions. Wear gloves when handling and prune only lightly to preserve its neat outline.
