Berberis julianae, the wintergreen barberry, is a dense evergreen shrub with rigid glossy leaves and a naturally formidable habit. Racemes of yellow flowers, often tinged red, appear in late spring and are followed by blue-black berries in autumn. Reaching around 3m, it is useful as a substantial screen or defensive hedge and grows in sun or partial shade on well-drained soil.
