Baptisia ‘Dark Chocolate’ Description

Baptisia ‘Dark Chocolate’ develops into a sturdy, clump-forming perennial with blue-green, three-parted foliage and an upright, shrub-like outline. Exceptionally long flower spikes carry charcoal-purple blooms that appear almost black in certain light during late spring and early summer. Inflated seed pods follow, gradually darkening and providing additional autumn structure. Growing to approximately 90cm high and wide, it combines well with ornamental grasses, pale flowers and silver foliage. Plant in full sun or light shade in moderately fertile or poor soil with excellent drainage. Once established it tolerates drought and requires little feeding. Its deep taproot resents transplanting, so choose the position carefully and avoid winter waterlogging in Irish gardens.
