Azalea japonica ‘Violetta’ Description

Azalea japonica ‘Violetta’ forms a compact, rounded evergreen shrub with small glossy green leaves. During May, the foliage becomes covered with vivid violet-purple funnel-shaped flowers, producing an intense block of colour in partially shaded planting. Mature shrubs generally reach between 50cm and 1 metre in height and spread, depending on growing conditions. Plant near the front of an ericaceous border, beneath lightly canopied trees or in a substantial container. Grow in moist but well-drained acidic soil in partial shade or gentle morning sun. It is hardy and well suited to Ireland’s cool climate, but avoid lime, strong afternoon sunlight and dry ground. Mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark.
