Astrantia major ‘Sparkling Stars Red’ Description

Astrantia major ‘Sparkling Stars Red’ forms a neat clump of divided mid-green leaves, producing wiry stems topped with detailed pincushion-like flowers during summer. The dark red-purple central flowers are framed by maroon bracts, creating rich colour that works well among ornamental grasses, roses and pale-flowered perennials. Growing to around 60 to 80cm, it fits comfortably through the middle of a mixed or cottage border and is also useful for cutting. Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It performs well in Ireland where the ground remains cool, although flowering will decline if the roots become dry. Deadhead regularly to encourage further blooms.
