Astilbe chinensis var. pumila is a dwarf perennial with finely cut dark green leaves often flushed red and dense spikes of rosy mauve flowers in late summer. Small in size and compact, it forms neat clumps that bring strong colour to the front of borders and rock gardens. Recognised with the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it is also generally pest free. A colourful small Astilbe well suited to Irish cottage gardens.
