Aster divaricatus Description

Aster divaricatus, also known as white wood aster, forms a bushy clump with heart-shaped basal leaves and upright dark stems. Flat-topped clusters of small white flowers appear in late summer and autumn, with their centres gradually changing from yellow towards pink. Reaching up to around 90cm, it brings a light, airy effect to woodland edges, partially shaded borders and informal planting beneath shrubs. It is more tolerant of shade than many asters and grows in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. The plant is hardy and generally trouble-free in Irish gardens. Cut back after flowering and divide established clumps in spring if they become congested.
