Aster alpinus ‘Violet’ Description

Aster alpinus ‘Violet’ forms a low clump of narrow, lance-shaped green leaves, producing upright stems topped with violet-blue daisy flowers up to around 5cm across. Unlike the familiar autumn-flowering asters, it blooms from late spring into early summer. Reaching approximately 25 to 30cm, it works well in rock gardens, gravel beds, alpine troughs and along sunny border edges. Grow it in full sun in moderately fertile, freely draining soil. Good winter drainage is particularly important in wetter Irish gardens, as persistent moisture around the crown can shorten its life. Deadhead after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and divide congested clumps in spring when necessary.
