Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ keeps the strawberry tree’s evergreen foliage and attractive red-brown bark in a much denser shrub, usually reaching about 2.5m rather than tree size. Pink-tinged white flowers and rough red fruit can appear together in autumn, although this compact selection is often less free-flowering and fruiting than the species. Give it full sun and a sheltered, well-drained position.
