Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, is an evergreen native to Ireland with leathery green leaves, red-brown peeling bark and white to pink-tinged urn-shaped flowers in autumn. The previous year’s flowers ripen into strawberry-like red fruit at the same time, giving mature plants two seasons in one. It prefers full sun, good drainage and shelter from cold drying winds.
