Araucaria araucana Description

Araucaria araucana develops into a tall, imposing evergreen tree with whorled branches densely covered in dark green, triangular leaves. Young trees have a strongly geometric outline, while older specimens gradually form a broad, open crown and may produce large cones on the upper branches. It can eventually exceed 20 metres in height, so it should be planted well away from buildings, paths and boundaries. Grow it in an open position in moist but well-drained soil, with shelter from severe drying winds while young. It generally performs well in Ireland’s mild climate, but the sharp foliage makes it unsuitable beside frequently used paths or children’s play areas. Little pruning is required or desirable.
