Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’ is a strong shade perennial, building a mound of brownish-purple foliage on purple stems before sending up fragrant, off-white flower spikes in early autumn. At around 1–1.5m in flower it gives useful height without a heavy outline, particularly in cool, moist, sheltered borders where the dark leaves can be seen against lighter planting.
