Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ earns its place as much for winter as for foliage, with young branches developing a conspicuous coral-red colour after leaf fall. Pinkish-yellow spring leaves become green in summer and yellow in autumn. Eventually reaching around 6m, it is better treated as a small tree than a compact patio maple.
