Acer palmatum ‘Brown Sugar’ Description

Acer palmatum ‘Brown Sugar’ is a compact Japanese maple whose changing colours provide interest from spring into winter. Young leaves and shoots emerge in chocolate-brown tones before maturing to dark green. A second flush of vivid red growth appears during summer, standing out clearly against the older foliage, followed by orange and red autumn colour. Once the leaves fall, bright red young branches remain visible. Its naturally well-branched habit generally stays around 1.5 metres high and wide, making it useful in small borders, courtyards and patio containers. Grow it in moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, avoiding a hot, exposed position. Container-grown plants should be watered regularly so the root ball never dries out completely.
