Acer palmatum
Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum, the Japanese maple, is a variable small tree 4–8m tall and wide, flowering in April and May. Its deeply lobed leaves bring fine autumn colour in shades of red and orange, complemented by small red flowers and winged fruits. Bushy and deciduous, it is valued for its graceful branching structure. In Irish gardens, it is a low maintenance favourite for courtyards, borders, and woodland planting.
