Hydrangeas are generally robust shrubs, so a plant with yellow leaves, wilting stems or spotted foliage should not immediately be assumed to have a serious disease. Quite often the first problem is cultural: roots that are too dry, soil that remains waterlogged, excessive sun, poor drainage or a plant weakened by unsuitable conditions. Disease and pest damage become more likely when a hydrangea is already under stress.
The useful approach is therefore diagnostic rather than corrective. Look at which leaves are affected, whether the newest growth or oldest foliage is involved, what the soil feels like below the surface, whether the whole plant or only one branch is failing, and what the weather has been doing recently. Those observations usually tell more than the colour of one damaged leaf.

Start with the plant's growing conditions
Several hydrangea problems produce remarkably similar symptoms. A plant may wilt because it is dry, but roots damaged by saturated soil can leave the foliage looking almost identical. Yellow leaves may indicate a nutrient problem, yet they can also accompany excessive moisture, root disease, mildew or mite damage. Treating the symptom without checking the cause can therefore make matters worse, particularly when a wilting plant in waterlogged soil is given still more water.
Hydrangeas perform best where moisture is reasonably consistent but excess water can drain away. Organic matter and mulch help moderate changes in soil moisture, while a suitably open position allows foliage to dry and reduces the stagnant conditions in which some fungal problems become more troublesome. If a plant has struggled repeatedly since it was planted, it is worth reviewing its position and soil rather than treating each new symptom separately. Why are my hydrangea leaves turning yellow?
Yellow foliage is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The pattern of yellowing matters, because a uniform loss of colour from older leaves suggests something different from pale new foliage in which the veins remain distinctly green.
Yellow new leaves with green veins
When young leaves become yellow while their veins remain green, iron chlorosis is a strong possibility. Hydrangeas can grow across a useful range of soils, but alkaline conditions can make iron and other micronutrients difficult for the roots to absorb even when those elements are physically present in the ground. The plant is effectively unable to use what the soil contains.
This is particularly worth considering where lime has been applied repeatedly or where the soil is naturally alkaline. Correcting the underlying soil reaction is more useful than repeatedly feeding a plant without knowing what it lacks. Where chlorosis is suspected, checking the soil before making substantial amendments gives a firmer basis for deciding what needs to change.
Older leaves turning uniformly yellow
Uniform yellowing that begins on older, lower foliage can indicate inadequate nitrogen, although feeding should not be the automatic response to every pale hydrangea. A plant with damaged roots may be unable to take up nutrients efficiently, and applying more fertiliser to waterlogged or unhealthy roots does not address that problem.
Check moisture and drainage first. If the root environment is sound and growth generally appears weak and pale, nutrient supply becomes a more plausible explanation. Hydrangeas benefit from reasonable fertility, but excessive nitrogen is not desirable either, because it can encourage soft, extended growth rather than a well-balanced shrub.
Yellowing combined with wilting or leaf drop
A combination of yellow foliage, wilting, reduced growth and premature leaf fall deserves closer attention to the roots. Phytophthora and other root rots can produce these symptoms, particularly where drainage is poor or moisture fluctuates between extremes. The important distinction is that adding water does not revive a plant whose roots are already damaged.

A wilting hydrangea may be too dry or too wet
Hydrangeas have large leaves and can lose water quickly, so temporary wilting during warm, dry conditions is not unusual, particularly in Hydrangea macrophylla. A genuinely dry plant should respond after the root zone has been watered thoroughly and allowed time to rehydrate. Mulching around the root area helps reduce repeated swings between dry and moist soil.
The picture changes when the soil is already wet. Persistent wilting after prolonged rain, especially when it is accompanied by yellowing, leaf loss or poor growth, can indicate damaged roots rather than drought. Phytophthora root rot is associated with sudden wilting and yellowing, while Armillaria can cause individual branches to remain limp even when moisture is apparently adequate. Healthy young feeder roots are normally pale; brown, deteriorating roots provide another indication that the problem lies below ground.
Do not keep watering a persistently wilted hydrangea simply because the foliage looks dry. Check the root zone first. Improving drainage, reducing prolonged saturation and maintaining more even moisture are fundamental because a hydrangea root system requires air as well as water.
Brown edges and scorched hydrangea leaves
Brown, crisp margins on leaves or flowers are often environmental rather than infectious. Strong sun combined with inadequate moisture can scorch hydrangeas, with mophead and lacecap forms particularly vulnerable when their broad leaves and large flower heads are losing water faster than the roots can replace it.
A plant may tolerate considerable sun where the soil remains reliably moist, whereas the same cultivar can scorch in a hotter, drier or more exposed position. This is why light and moisture have to be considered together. Increasing water during a dry spell may deal with a temporary problem, but a hydrangea that scorches in the same position every summer may be better with some protection from the strongest sun or drying wind.

Brown or purple spots on hydrangea leaves
Several fungi can cause leaf spotting, and the exact pathogen is often less important to the home gardener than the severity and the conditions encouraging it. Cercospora leaf spot, for example, produces roughly circular tan to grey lesions that may have dark purple margins. It commonly becomes more noticeable from later summer onwards and is usually disfiguring rather than fatal.
Anthracnose can also affect hydrangea leaves and flowers, producing brown circular or irregular lesions, particularly where conditions favour infection. Plants already in poor health tend to suffer more conspicuously, while repeated wetting of the foliage can encourage several leaf-spotting diseases.
Where spotting is limited, drastic treatment is rarely justified. Remove badly affected or fallen material, clear old debris from around the plant and improve air movement where stems have become congested. Watering the root zone rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage is also sensible where practical. A shrub that remains vigorous despite some late-season spotting is in a very different condition from one that is simultaneously wilting, yellowing and losing growth.
Powdery mildew on hydrangeas
Powdery mildew appears as a pale grey or whitish coating on the leaves and can later be accompanied by yellow, purple or damaged areas of foliage. Hydrangeas can remain otherwise quite vigorous, so a light infection is usually more unattractive than dangerous, but severe or recurring mildew often indicates that the plant would benefit from better growing conditions.
Humidity, restricted air movement, shade and plant stress can all contribute. Thin overcrowded growth where appropriate, remove heavily affected leaves and clear fallen material rather than allowing infected foliage to accumulate beneath the shrub. Regular moisture and sensible feeding also help the plant maintain stronger growth, although neither should be taken to excess.
Cultivar susceptibility differs. In Michael Dirr's hydrangea evaluations, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ayesha’ was among the cultivars showing useful resistance to mildew, although resistance should not be confused with immunity. This distinction can matter where mildew appears repeatedly in a garden and a replacement plant is already being considered.
Grey mould on flowers and leaves
Grey, fluffy mould on damaged flowers, buds or leaves is characteristic of Botrytis. It favours moist, humid conditions and often becomes noticeable after wet weather, particularly where flowers or other tissues have already been damaged. Spent flower heads and dead plant material can provide more tissue on which the fungus can establish.
Hygiene is particularly useful here. Remove affected flowers and dead or dying material, keep the centre of an overcrowded shrub reasonably open and avoid leaving decaying plant debris caught among the stems. Botrytis can look alarming on an individual flower head without necessarily indicating that the entire shrub is in serious decline, so the condition of the surrounding stems and foliage should also be considered.
Common hydrangea pests
Hydrangeas are not usually plants that require constant pest control, but several insects and other small pests can occasionally damage them. Identifying the pattern of injury is more useful than assuming every hole or distorted leaf has the same cause.
Aphids on new shoots
Aphids favour soft young growth. Affected shoots may become stunted or distorted, while the foliage can develop a sticky coating of honeydew. Inspect the newest stems if growth is unexpectedly weak or curled. Small infestations can often be physically washed from the plant with water rather than requiring a more elaborate response.
Spider mites
Mites feed mainly from the undersides of leaves and can cause fine spotting, yellowing and, in a heavy infestation, premature leaf loss. They favour warm, dry conditions and are generally more troublesome on protected or indoor plants than on hydrangeas growing outdoors.
If mites are suspected, hold a white sheet of paper beneath an affected leaf and tap or shake the foliage. Tiny moving specks are a useful indication. Increasing humidity around protected plants and washing foliage can make conditions less favourable, while badly damaged leaves can be removed.
Slugs and snails
Slugs and snails are most likely to matter on young plants and soft emerging growth, particularly where conditions remain moist. Ragged holes and partially eaten shoots are more characteristic than the spotting produced by a fungal disease. Inspect around the base of the plant and among sheltering debris if damage appears overnight.
A mature hydrangea will often tolerate a small amount of chewing without difficulty, whereas repeated loss of the emerging shoots on a newly planted shrub can be much more significant. Keeping the immediate area reasonably tidy also removes some of the damp hiding places used by these pests.
Distorted leaves do not always mean disease
Unusual twisting, narrowing or distortion of leaves can occasionally be associated with viral problems, but similar symptoms may also be produced by eriophyid mites. Hydrangea viruses are comparatively uncommon, and the visual resemblance between different causes makes hasty diagnosis unwise.
A plant with persistent unexplained distortion should not be used for propagation until the cause is clearer. Examine it for pests first and consider whether herbicide damage, frost or another recent stress could explain the affected growth. Where symptoms continue to spread through new growth, obtaining a firmer diagnosis is preferable to repeatedly applying unrelated treatments.
When a hydrangea problem is mostly cosmetic
The time of year matters. A few spotted or mildewed leaves late in the season on an otherwise vigorous deciduous shrub are far less worrying than rapid deterioration in spring or early summer. Cercospora leaf spot seldom kills hydrangeas, and powdery mildew may remain largely cosmetic, particularly when it arrives after the plant has already made most of its seasonal growth.
That does not mean the symptoms should be ignored completely. Clearing affected fallen foliage, improving air circulation and correcting obvious moisture stress can reduce the chance of the same problem becoming more severe. It does mean that removing an established shrub because of a handful of imperfect leaves is usually unnecessary.
Signs that deserve closer investigation
- The whole plant remains wilted although the soil is already wet: investigate drainage and root health rather than adding more water.
- New leaves are yellow while the veins remain green: consider iron chlorosis and the soil's alkalinity.
- Older lower leaves become uniformly pale: nutrient deficiency is possible, but check root conditions before feeding.
- Grey or white growth appears on leaves or flowers: distinguish powdery mildew from the softer grey mould associated with Botrytis.
- Leaves develop numerous brown or purple-edged spots: improve plant health, hygiene and air movement and monitor whether the spotting continues to spread.
- Young growth is sticky, curled or distorted: inspect closely for aphids and other sap-feeding pests.
- Leaves are finely speckled or yellowing from the underside: check for mites, particularly on protected plants in warm, dry conditions.
Healthy growing conditions prevent many hydrangea problems
The most effective long-term protection is not a treatment applied after every damaged leaf appears. Hydrangeas are most resilient when they have fertile soil with organic matter, consistent moisture without waterlogging, suitable light, reasonable shelter and enough space for air to circulate through the plant. Mulching helps moderate moisture around the roots, while removing dead or diseased material prevents old debris from accumulating within the shrub.
When problems recur, look for the condition they have in common. A plant that develops mildew every year in a cramped position, wilts repeatedly in a dry border or turns yellow in poorly drained soil is indicating that the site itself deserves attention. Correcting that underlying limitation usually does more for the shrub than repeatedly treating individual symptoms.
