When a balcony plant starts wilting, yellowing or developing brown leaves, the visible symptom is only the starting point. The same symptom can have several causes. A wilted plant may be too dry, but it can also wilt because waterlogged roots are no longer functioning properly. Brown leaves may point to drought, wind, sun, cold or root damage rather than a disease.
Diagnosis is therefore a process of elimination. Check the compost, drainage, recent weather and exposure first, then inspect the leaves and stems closely for pests or clear disease symptoms. Start with the growing conditions before treating the plant
Many balcony plant problems are caused or made worse by the root environment and exposure. Containers give roots far less room to compensate for changing conditions than open ground, while walls, overhangs, glass and railings can create very different microclimates within the same balcony.
Before deciding that a plant has a pest, disease or nutrient deficiency, check five things:
- Compost moisture: is the root ball dry, evenly moist or saturated?
- Drainage: can surplus water leave the pot freely, or is the container standing in water?
- Recent weather: has there been strong wind, hot sun, prolonged rain, a cold night or a sudden change in conditions?
- Light: is the plant receiving much more or much less light than it is suited to?
- The plant itself: check new shoots, buds, stems and especially the undersides of leaves for insects, webbing, sticky deposits, spots or fungal growth.
If several plants in the same position develop similar damage at the same time, look closely at the shared conditions. If one plant is affected while its neighbours remain healthy, inspect that plant more closely for root problems, pests or disease.
1. Wilting: check whether the plant is dry or waterlogged
What it looks like
Leaves and soft stems lose firmness and hang down. With more severe stress, leaves may yellow, brown at the edges or drop.
Why it happens
Wilting usually means that the leaves are losing water faster than the roots can replace it, but that does not automatically mean the compost is dry. A plant in saturated compost can also wilt because waterlogging reduces the air available around the roots and damaged roots cannot take up water normally.
On a sunny or exposed balcony, a small container can dry rapidly in wind. On a recessed or shaded Irish balcony, the opposite problem may occur and the compost may stay wet for days after watering or prolonged rain.
What to do
Push a finger below the compost surface or otherwise check the root zone before reaching for the watering can. If it is dry, water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain. If it is already wet, do not add more water simply because the foliage is limp. Check the drainage holes, saucers and growing medium instead.

2. Yellow leaves: do not assume the plant needs fertiliser
What it looks like
One leaf, the oldest leaves or much of the plant may turn pale green or yellow. Growth may also slow or become weak.
Why it happens
Yellowing is a general stress symptom rather than a diagnosis. It can follow repeated drying, prolonged waterlogging, damaged roots, unsuitable soil conditions, low light, cold or an actual nutrient shortage. Some plants also shed older leaves naturally as they grow or enter dormancy.
Insufficient light can produce pale, stretched growth with longer spaces between leaves. Excess nitrogen can create the opposite appearance: very soft, lush growth that is not necessarily healthier. Adding more feed without checking the cause can therefore make the situation worse.
What to do
Check moisture and drainage first. Then compare the plant's current position with its normal light needs and look for recent cold or other weather stress. Only treat feeding as the likely cause when the growing conditions are otherwise suitable and the plant has genuinely exhausted the nutrients available to it.

3. Brown, crispy or bleached leaves: separate scorch from disease
What it looks like
Leaf tips or margins become brown and dry, exposed areas bleach or fade, or irregular dry patches appear on the foliage. Tender leaves may become brittle after severe damage.
Why it happens
Balcony plants are exposed to several forms of scorch. Strong sun can damage shade-loving foliage, particularly where light is intensified by pale walls, paving or glass. Wind increases water loss from leaves and can produce dry brown edges even when temperatures are moderate. Repeated drought can cause similar browning.
Cold can also leave damaged patches or browned foliage. In Ireland, late spring frost can catch soft new growth, while exposed evergreen plants can suffer a combination of winter wind and cold.
What to do
Look at where the damage occurs. Scorch concentrated on the most exposed side of a plant points towards sun or wind rather than a spreading disease. Check the compost as well, because drought makes leaves less able to tolerate strong sun and wind.

4. Wind damage: look for tearing, breakage and repeated drying
What it looks like
Leaves may be torn or ragged, stems can rub against supports, soft shoots may snap and foliage on the exposed side of a plant can brown. Tall or top-heavy plants may lean or become unstable in their containers.
Why it happens
Wind causes both mechanical and moisture stress. Gusts physically move leaves and stems, while moving air increases transpiration and dries containers faster. High-rise, coastal and corner balconies can be particularly exposed because buildings deflect and accelerate wind around their edges.
What to do
Remove clearly broken material, retie stems where support is appropriate and make sure the pot itself is stable. Check moisture more frequently after windy weather, but do not compensate by leaving the compost constantly saturated. For a recurring problem, improve shelter or change the plant rather than repeatedly repairing a plant that is unsuited to the position.
5. Waterlogging and root stress: the leaves can look thirsty even when the pot is wet
What it looks like
The compost remains wet for a long time while growth becomes weak, yellow or wilted. In severe cases, roots and the base of the plant may begin to decay.
Why it happens
Roots need air as well as water. When the spaces within the growing medium remain filled with water, oxygen around the roots falls and normal root function is disrupted. The plant may then show symptoms that resemble drought because damaged roots cannot supply the foliage properly.
Persistent Irish rain can create this problem in open containers, especially during the cooler months when plants use less water. Blocked drainage holes, compacted compost and pots sitting in collected water make it worse.
What to do

6. Aphids: inspect soft growth and flower buds
What they look like
Aphids are small sap-sucking insects that often gather in colonies on soft new shoots, around buds and on the undersides of leaves. Heavy infestations can slow growth. A shiny or sticky deposit on leaves below the colony can be honeydew produced while the insects feed.
Why they become a problem
They reproduce quickly and can arrive on newly purchased plants. A balcony may also have fewer natural predators than a ground-level garden, so a small colony can build before it is noticed.
What to do
Inspect new plants before placing them among established containers. When aphids are found early, remove them by hand where practical or wash them from the affected shoots and leaf undersides with water. Isolating a newly infested pot from the rest of the balcony can also slow their spread.
Repeat the inspection rather than assuming one clean-up has removed every insect. Strong infestations are much easier to manage when action begins while the colony is still small.
7. Whitefly: watch for a cloud of tiny white insects
What it looks like
Small white insects rise from the foliage when an infested plant is disturbed. They feed mainly on the undersides of leaves, which can lead to yellowing and wilting. Sticky honeydew may also collect on foliage below.
What to do
Check the undersides of leaves, particularly on recently introduced plants. Separate an infested plant where practical and remove badly affected leaves if doing so will not seriously weaken the plant. Washing the foliage can reduce the number of adults and immature insects, but repeat checks are necessary because several life stages can be present at once.
8. Spider mites: fine webbing and pale stippling are the main clues
What it looks like
Spider mites are extremely small, so the plant often shows the problem before the mites themselves are obvious. Look for fine webbing and tiny pale or yellow speckles across the leaves. As damage increases, foliage can turn yellow or brown and become brittle.
When it happens
Spider mites favour warm, dry conditions. A sheltered sunny balcony can therefore develop a problem during dry weather even in an otherwise cool Irish summer.
What to do
Inspect the undersides of affected leaves and separate the plant from neighbouring pots if possible. Washing both sides of the foliage can physically remove many mites. Keep the plant appropriately watered so drought stress is not added to the damage, but do not create waterlogged compost in an attempt to raise humidity.
Continue checking the plant because eggs and hidden mites can allow the infestation to return.
9. Mildew and mould: distinguish fungal growth from simple leaf damage
What it looks like
Powdery mildew produces a pale or whitish powder-like coating on leaves and young growth. Other moulds can appear as grey or darker fungal growth on damaged, crowded or decaying plant tissue. Some fungal diseases also produce spots or discoloured patches, so do not diagnose every mark from colour alone.
Why it happens
Fungal problems become more likely where conditions favour them. Crowded foliage, prolonged leaf wetness, humid still air and infected plant debris can all contribute. Wet Irish weather does not automatically cause disease, but dense balcony planting that stays damp for long periods can create a favourable environment.
What to do
Remove badly affected leaves and fallen diseased material rather than leaving it around the pot. Improve spacing and airflow where planting has become congested, and water the compost rather than routinely wetting the foliage. 10. Cold and frost damage: sudden weather changes can mimic disease
What it looks like
Soft new growth may blacken, collapse, become translucent or later turn brown after a cold night. Leaves can also drop after a sudden fall in temperature. Damage is often most obvious on the youngest or most exposed growth.
What to do
Check the timing. If symptoms appeared immediately after a sharp cold spell, weather damage is more likely than a disease that happened to appear on the same night. Protect vulnerable plants before further frost and allow time to see which stems remain healthy before carrying out major pruning.

- Check the compost. Is it dry, moist or waterlogged?
- Check drainage. Make sure water can escape and the pot is not standing in water.
- Think about the last few days. Strong sun, wind, heavy rain, cold or a sudden move can explain fresh damage.
- Check the plant's position. Confirm that its light and exposure suit the species.
- Inspect the undersides of leaves. Look for aphids, whitefly, mites, webbing and eggs.
- Look for distinctive disease signs. Powdery coatings, spreading mould, rust-coloured pustules or progressive spots deserve closer identification.
- Only then consider feeding. Fertiliser cannot correct drought, waterlogging, wind damage or diseased roots.
