Rockery plants are compact choices for free-draining pockets, gravel, stone edges and raised areas where smaller plants can be appreciated at close range.
Rockery plants bring detailed flowers and foliage to small, sharply defined planting spaces. They work well between stones, along raised edges and in gravel where low growth can be appreciated at close range. Irish rockeries perform best when drainage is deliberately improved, as many compact mountain and Mediterranean plants dislike sitting wet through winter. Stone, slope and gritty soil can create the drier root conditions they need.
