Hydrangea viburnoides Description

Hydrangea viburnoides, formerly widely grown as Pileostegia viburnoides, is a slow-growing evergreen climber with leathery, narrowly elliptical dark green leaves. Aerial roots allow the long extension shoots to attach naturally to walls, tree trunks and other solid surfaces. Dense clusters of small creamy-white, star-shaped flowers with prominent stamens appear in late summer, providing nectar for visiting insects. Mature plants can eventually reach around 4 to 8 metres. Grow in shade, partial shade or sheltered sun in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is hardy in many Irish gardens, although a protected wall helps maintain the best evergreen foliage. Keep vigorous extension shoots clear of gutters and windows and prune in early spring where necessary.
