Leycesteria formosa ‘Golden Lanterns’ Description

Leycesteria formosa ‘Golden Lanterns’ is a deciduous shrub with upright hollow stems and striking yellow to golden-green leaves. Hanging clusters of small white flowers surrounded by deep burgundy-purple bracts appear from summer into autumn, followed by red fruits that ripen to dark purple and attract birds. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Some light encourages the strongest golden foliage, while very hot exposure can scorch the leaves. It is hardy and grows readily in Irish gardens. Birds may spread the seeds, so unwanted seedlings can occasionally appear nearby. Prune older stems hard in spring to encourage fresh, brightly coloured growth.
