Kniphofia ‘Royal Castle’ Description

Kniphofia ‘Royal Castle’ is a clump-forming red hot poker producing upright spikes of tubular flowers in warm shades of red, orange and yellow. The exact balance of colour can vary as individual flowers open and mature, creating a lively two-tone effect above strap-like green foliage. Plants generally reach around 80cm to 1 metre high in flower. Grow in full sun in fertile soil that remains reasonably moist during spring and summer but drains freely. It is hardy, although prolonged winter saturation around the crown can cause losses, particularly on heavy Irish soil. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. Remove spent spikes after flowering and tidy old foliage in spring rather than cutting healthy leaves back before winter.
