Kalmia latifolia ‘Nani’

Compact evergreen growth and decorative late-spring flower clusters make Kalmia latifolia ‘Nani’ suitable for smaller ericaceous borders and containers. Like other mountain laurels, it needs acidic, humus-rich soil with reliable moisture and should not be planted into lime-rich ground.

Kalmia latifolia ‘Nani’ Description

Kalmia latifolia ‘Nani’ is a compact selection of mountain laurel forming a dense evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves. Clusters of distinctive cup-shaped flowers appear in late spring to early summer, adding colour above the neat foliage. Its restrained habit makes it particularly useful where larger Kalmia cultivars would eventually become too broad. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in acidic, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It combines well with rhododendrons, pieris, azaleas and other ericaceous shrubs and can also be grown in a generous container filled with lime-free compost. Avoid alkaline soil and drying winds. Pruning is rarely required apart from removing damaged growth. All parts of the plant are toxic if eaten.
