Iris sibirica Description

Iris sibirica, Siberian iris, forms graceful clumps of narrow upright green leaves with slender flower stems appearing in early summer. The species typically carries blue to violet beardless flowers, while named cultivars extend the colour range considerably. Mature plants generally reach around 70cm to 1 metre high and gradually broaden with age. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but is not permanently waterlogged. It is fully hardy and particularly well suited to Ireland’s cool, moist climate. Siberian irises combine well with grasses and other moisture-loving perennials and remain attractive after flowering. Remove spent stems and divide congested clumps in late summer or early autumn when flowering begins to decline.
